剃刀の刃 [DVD]
I guess Larry is not a kind of a person who inherently likes reading or studying. However, when being in Paris, like his dirty apartment shelves prove, he reads tons of books to contemplate life. At the high mountain as a bonfire goes out, the only burnable stuff he has is the very book he is reading. After thinking twice he decides to burn it to warm himself up again. It is one of the scenes that you have to watch carefully because it plays an important part in the film. When he looks around the magnificent view of the mounatins, he realizes that there should be something that can be beyond what you can grasp from books. In this scene, the book at his hand is kind of like a lame duck for the immediate need of warming his cold hands, which suggests that knowledge unless it works could be just a white elephant before the reality you're facing right now. What I noticed here, on which I'd like to put an emphasis, is that after going through some twists and turns, he decides to return to 'self'- what he was; a guy who didn't read a lot and didn't like aristocratic guys but loved life out of office and power, loved people who are ordinary yet struggling to live their own lives. So he decides to go down the mountain saying "It's easy to be spiritual at the top of the hill.", which tells you that he's made up his mind to be spiritually rich guy even in the secular sometimes vulgar world down here.
If he were a pundit in the ivory tower, he wouln't have burned the book then becasue reading and staying cooped up in an isolated lab would be his job for life. In that case, books would be pretty much important prior to anything.Larry as I mentioned above, however, should be a guy thinking life ,say, on a busy street, helping people in the 'obscene' world, not in the 'isolated utopia' at least.
He burns the book to be through with what he thought he could discover an ansewer toward a 'what's life all about?' type of questions, most likely, so that he can return to his true self and the place in which he should be.
Books which are regarded as a symbol of 'knowledge' in the film show themselves up also as a thing depicting stark contrast between 'human' and 'seeming to be human but deep down almost like a machine with no spirit' which was caustically criticized by a German sociologist Max Weber. You can see this especially when Sophie goes insane as her husband and son were killed in an accident but a catholic sister tries to calm her down just by telling her the conventional stereotyped statesments like "The Lord called them. They will be in peace with Him forever.". Sophie appears to be insane here but I do believe it is quit natural that you be insane in that situation. Rather I dare to say that it's the sister who deserves condemning as insane.
The 'pious' sister seems most likely to me to be another symbol of 'books' or 'knowledges' that do look cool on the surface but quit lame actually in saving people in need. What she says is too perfect to work with almost no affection or consideration attached to the words. Her attitude might be what sould be 'burned down' like so is the book at the top of the hill. I guess or hope Larry would feel the same way.
I'm not saying reading or thinking is harmful. I'm just trying to say Larry goes back to who he is.
The journey Larry went on turns out to be the one that takes him back 'home' in the end. Here is a message I got from the film : Return to your true self, and you can be you.
This movie is great!
SONIC! FAST! LIFE!
In 1946 this movie won the Academy award for best supporting actress "Anne Baxter.” There is an all star cast including Tyrone Power and Gene Tierney. With all the star power the actors did not outshine the characters they were portraying. I will always think that Somerset Maugham looks like Herbert Marshall.
The screenplay by Lamar Trotti stuck close to the book by the same name and message of W. Somerset Maugham. A few adventures were compressed and maybe an improvement as far as this media goes. Tyrone Power ...Larry Darrell did get to do some things that were acts of W. Somerset Maugham in the book and it was difficult to imagine Gene Tierney ...Isabel Bradley was supposed to be a pudgy child.
Over all this is a story of different people from different backgrounds and how they deal with adversity. The main character has to figure out in his mind, why someone else had to die to save his life at the very end of the war? In the process of looking he goes to India and seeks help in understanding the way the world works. There alone in the mountains on the edge of dawn he has a revelation. He now must go back to the world and apply what he has learned.
Does he figure it out his dilemma?
